Joseph Martin Gardner

Joseph was born on October 15, 1936, in Hughestown, Pennsylvania, to James and Elizabeth (Gerrity) Gardner.

Joseph is survived by his loving partner of many years, Ingrid Hansen. He was the devoted father of Martin Gardner, Bonny Hannah, Patricia Raines, Maureen Collier, Heather Gardner, and Dawn Gardner. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Julianna Raines, Lee Raines, Vincent Hannah, and Ingrid’s granddaughter MacKenzie Hansen, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him greatly.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosemary Gardner; his parents; and his siblings, Donald Gardner, Marguerite Gardner, Elizabeth Kelly, Jane Reardon, Ann Marie Barber, and Joseph Gardner.

Joseph dedicated 32 years of his career to the Ford Motor Company, where he served as a Human Resources Manager. He took tremendous pride in his work and the relationships he built throughout his career. Prior to his time at Ford, Joseph honorably served his country in the United States Army as a member of the Army Security Agency (ASA). His military service took him overseas, and his adventurous spirit continued throughout his life as he lived in both Venezuela and France.

Above all else, Joseph was a loving and devoted father to his six children. He possessed a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome. Whether meeting a lifelong friend or a complete stranger, Joseph was genuinely interested in hearing each person's story. His warmth, sense of humor, and curiosity made conversations with him memorable, and he never missed an opportunity to connect with others.

An avid reader and lifelong learner, Joseph enjoyed expanding his knowledge and exploring new ideas. He also had a passion for collecting and restoring cars, motorcycles, and antique radios, delighting in tinkering with them. He had an eye for hidden gems and was known for his skill at thrifting and uncovering unique and interesting finds.

Joseph found great happiness on the water, enjoying boating and spending time aboard his pontoon. In retirement, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of living on a lake. The Christmas season held a special place in his heart, and he became well known for his elaborate holiday decorations, always going above and beyond to make the season special for his family and friends.

Despite his proud Irish heritage, he also had a deep appreciation for Italian culture, never passing up a plate of spaghetti and meatballs, and loved listening to the music of Janis Joplin. He created lasting memories for all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Joseph's memory to the American Cancer Society.

Visitation will be held at the Elton Black & Son Union Lake Chapel, 1233 Union Lake Road, White Lake, Michigan 48386, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, with a Rosary service beginning at 5:00 PM.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Parish, 9086 Hutchins Road, White Lake, Michigan 48386. Joseph will lie in state at the church beginning at 10:00 AM, one hour prior to Mass.
