If I could go back to re-live some of the best times of my life, one of my first stops would take me to the middle of the 1970’s in a modest ranch not far from where the old Pontiac Silverdome used to host the Michigan Panthers, the Detroit Pistons, the Monster Trucks, and the Motorcross/Supercross races. Mike and I would sit in the middle of the living room floor, in front of a big picture window. Our eyes glued to the big box TV playing one of our favorite Godzilla movies. Ultimately this led to a wrestling match. Of course, he could have easily taken me, but he would still let his little sis win from time to time.
Mike preferred a heavy metal style that included his jean vest jacket, black leather coat, Converse high tops, and endless bandanas that wrapped across his head and up and down both arms and legs. He was always drawn to live music. Not only the heavy metal music of the time like Metallica & AC/DC, but I remember he started to sing in a garage band on the backstreets from where we lived. Later he became lead singer for Sounds-Like which was one of his greatest passions.
He had his own way of looking out for me. You see, Mike had a reputation that preceded him. He had an aura about him that displayed confidence with a little “don’t mess with me” thrown in. Yet, he was as gentle as a teddy bear with those he cared about. I treasure and I miss these times. And, over the years, I felt Mike’s love through our hugs and family time together. I enjoyed our conversations. I loved being Michael P.’s little sister.
One day, I will see Mike again at the sidewalk in Christian Memorial. And when that time comes, I will hold him tightly. Then, I will do what all little sisters are supposed to do and start picking on him and prodding him. Who knows, maybe we’ll have a Godzilla rematch.
Forever in my heart.
