Richard Emery Schaufelberger

September 7, 1935March 8, 2014

On Saturday, March 8, Spartan Nation lost its biggest fan. Richard Schaufelberger, father, grandfather, widower and 1959 graduate of Michigan State University died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 78.

A former Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, Richard spent his career as an accountant at Shell Oil and then General Motors, from which he retired in the mid 90’s. Richard was a proud father, grandfather, musician, devoted Lutheran, supporter of the Republican Party and a man who was rarely seen without wearing his beloved green and white.

He is survived by his children, Kim Richelle (Richard) Beattie, Diane Marie (John) LaForge, and four grandchildren; Aleka Marie (Bradley) Baker, Emily Kristine Beattie, William Ross Beattie and Jan Andreas Kruszewski. He was also excited about the news of his first great grand child that is expected in October. The family thanks Seasons Hospice Foundation for their loving care and encourages friends, former colleagues and Spartans everywhere to donate to this kind and caring organization at

In addition, the family recognizes the staff at Independence Village of White Lake, in particular Donna and Nathan for their loving support, plus Mary and Angie who comforted Richard during his final moments.

Richard’s life will be celebrated by his family during a private service, where he will be remembered for his sharp wit, detailed story telling, love for God, family and country and, of course, his passion for MSU… Go Green, forever! Military Service with Honors will be held Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 11:00 am at Great Lakes National Cemetery: Located at 4200 Belford Road, Holly, Michigan, 48442

Dick was a good friend. We will remember him always for his love of God, becoming a Lutheran, devotion to Nancy when she was sick, his Spartan pride, love of GM cars, singing in the GM choir with Nancy and the Festival choir here at Christ Our Savior. His presence will forever be felt within the walls of our church especially his beautifully gifted bass voice. He spoke often of his children and grandchildren and was very proud of all of you! May God give you comfort at this time.

The world's lost a good man, and I've lost a good friend. Rest in Peace, Dick.

I am so sorry to hear of your Father's passing. I am a member (alto) of the Detroit Lutheran Singers and had the privilege of sitting in front of your father and enjoying his beautiful bass voice.

May God give you comfort at this time of loss.

While I am saddened by this news, I rejoice in the fact that Dick is now with Nancy and they can once again celebrate the green and white in heaven together forever. I enjoyed my ministry with Dick (and of course Nancy) during my 6 years as Minister of Music at Christ Our Savior, Livonia. He always had a great story to tell and was always done in great detail! My thoughts and prayers go to the family. As Dick always said in choir at COS... Soli Deo Gloria! To God Alone Be the Glory. Mark Lohmeyer (West Palm Beach, FL.)

I am so very sorry for your loss! We really enjoyed the time spent with Dick and Nancy as neighbors and as a fellow condo board member. He always had a joke and good things to say regarding his family. For a guy with a really sharp pencil, he had a kind heart. He will be missed. Darlene & Gary March
