Sylvia was born in the Philippines and moved to the mountains to avoid the worst of the impacts of WWII to that nation. After the war and completing her undergrad at the University of the Philippines, she came to the U.S. and the University of Michigan as a Fulbright Scholar to pursue a masters in comparative literature and a doctorate in education. She went on to earn a post-doctorate masters in the teaching of mathematics from the University of Detroit. She met Robert Scott Kramp, a life-long resident of Michigan in the mid-1950s and were married soon after at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ann Arbor.
Sylvia had a love of food, ideas, stories, and Michigan Football. Throughout her life, she especially loved genre fiction - Westerns, romance, and science fiction. Her favorite authors included Louis L'amour, Arthur C. Clarke, Mary Balogh, and Gorden Dixon. She loved her garden — irises and daylilies were among her favorites. She loved to cook and serve food to anyone who might enter her home.
Later in life, she rediscovered her passion for volunteering and travel. She often helped at the Waterford Community Center and traveled to Savannah, Europe, and the Porcupine Mountains. She walked across the Mackinac bridge annually for a number of years with her daughter Nisia during Labor Day bridge walk.
Sylvia died peacefully in her sleep after a long battle with dementia.
