Doris Darlene Fidler

Doris Darlene Fidler was born October 2, 1931, in Cobbville, Georgia, to Jacob Driver Webb and Vena Charlotte (Glassburn) Webb. The daughter of a farmer and a school teacher, Doris grew up in Freeport, Kansas, was raised in the Mennonite church, and later became a member of the Methodist faith.

She attended boarding school for high school girls at Hesston College from 1948–1950 and graduated from Harper High School in 1951. She continued her education in business school and became a professional secretary. Early in her career she was proud to work for the Army Corps of Engineers during construction of the Wichita flood-control “big ditch,” and she later worked for Beech Aircraft. For more than 20 years, she served as an executive secretary for Cummins Engine Company, where she retired.

Doris was married to Elmer Leroy Fidler (deceased) for 57 years. She is the mother of two children, Jon and Susan (deceased), and grandmother to Robyn, Nicholas (Baillye), Patrick, and Brandon (deceased). She treasured her granddaughter-in-love Baillye, and her great-grandchildren: Sophie, Gabriel, Kortney, and Gaven. Doris adored her 13-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, Tuppence, who preceded her in death.

An active member of University United Methodist Church, Doris served in the Rebecca Circle for eight years. Her greatest passions were family, reading, and traveling—she fulfilled a lifelong dream with a two-week trip to England and enjoyed many trips to New Mexico. Doris was a gifted and tireless maker: she crafted year-round, building furniture and miniature houses, doing tole painting, knitting, embroidery, sewing, ceramics, beading, and weaving. She loved dancing, gardening, and cooking, and she played the piano, harmonica, and guitar. Doris had a deep appreciation for culture, languages, and people, and she shared her creativity and warmth with all who knew her.

Doris brought a joyous spirit to every room and had a deep love of community, always ready to lend her time and talents to help others. She lived a full life defined by devotion to family, faith, creativity, and community. She will be remembered for her love of children, her talents, generosity, and the many ways she enriched the lives of those around her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at University United Methodist Church, 2220 N. Yale Ave., Wichita, KS 67220, on June 27, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.
