Jackie lived during the Dust Bowl years, and although he was very young, his family would tell him stories about how they survived the “black blizzards” and had to stuff rags in any tiny crack in the house or dust would blow straight through. He and his family were strong, hard-working people. They lived on a farm, and survived these years through the sheer determination that embodied those who lived on the Midwest plains during those years.
Jack married Mary Jane Salem, and had two sons, David Troy Mahan and Shawn Lee Mahan. Jack got remarried to Shirley (Moser) Mahan. In her later years, he cared for her as she suffered from Alzheimers until she passed. Jack was a second father for many of her kids. In addition to teaching, Jack also coached and spent what seems like a lifetime teaching Driver's Ed, and eventually truck driving when he retired. Jack taught Driver's Ed at Heights from 1965 to 1979. He became coordinator of the truck driving school until he returned to East High to teach Driver's Ed. Jack retired from USD 259 and continued to teach summer Driver's Ed in Andover. He had numerous grandchildren from Shirley's family and two by Shawn and Kiren Lee (children, Mela and Seela Lee). He was a man who loved his family most of all.
Jackie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley Mahan; most of his siblings, and many extended family members and dear friends.
He is survived by his first wife, Mary Jane; sons, Troy Mahan, Shawn (Kiren) Lee; Shirley's children; grandchildren, Mela and Seela Lee, and numerous grandchildren from Shirley's children; brother, Larry Mahan; and many friends and colleagues.
