John grew up in and around Nickerson, KS and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He later continued his education and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Wichita State University in 1977. John also dedicated part of his career to serving the community through his work with the Wichita Police Department.
On July 7, 1973, John married the love of his life, Sonja (Hopper) Gillock. Together they built a life centered around family time at their lake property in Oklahoma and making lasting memories.
John enjoyed fishing and camping in his younger years, listening to Wichita State baseball games, watching old Westerns, McDonald’s coffee chats with whomever would show up, but above all else, his greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren and family. He will be remembered for the stories he shared so often at Sunday dinners with his family, his service to his country and community, and the many memories he leaves with his family and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Don Gillock; and daughters, Carrie (Gillock) McClure and Rebecca (Gillock) Mason.
He is survived by his wife, Sonja Gillock; his children, Jason (Nicole) Gillock, Tim (Mary) Gillock, Bradley (Amanda) Gillock, and his son-in-law, Josh McClure. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren with whom he spent most of his time, Jack McClure, Landree and Avree Gillock, Amy and great-grandson Jaxson, Nicholas and Kalie Gillock.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Hillside Funeral Home West, 2929 West 13th Street North, Wichita, KS 67203.
