Ruthild (Spittel) Michaelis, 86, of Wolcott, and formerly of Pompano Beach, Florida and Easley, South Carolina, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, September 25, 2021. She was the wife of the late John Gunther Michaelis, married 53 years.
Born July 19, 1935 in Saalfeld, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Hans and Hilde (Gernhardt) Spittel. She immigrated to Hartford in 1953 and spent most of her life in Southern Florida where she lived and worked closely with her husband and youngest son, Carl. Ruthild loved sewing and gardening, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Ruthild is survived by her children Cynthia McCarthy and husband John, with whom she made her home, Carl Michaelis and partner Lori Howe, of Easley, South Carolina, and Thomas Michaelis of Greeneville, South Carolina; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Thea Sonnenberg of Southington, Gertraud Labsche of Germany and Irmtraud Labsche and husband Dieter of Germany. She also leaves nieces and nephews in the United States and Germany. She was predeceased by two sisters, Edith and her husband Wilhelm Ammerer of Stony Creek, and Brunhild Bias of Germany; and brothers-in-law Jon Sonnenberg of Southington and Hans Labsche of Germany.
The family has chosen to celebrate Ruthild’s life privately, with immediate family.
