Frances Amos (97) of Cowiche passed away on February 17, 2024, 3 months short of her 98 birthday. Frances Lee Weber was born May 25, 1926, in Chillicothe, Missouri. Frances was the middle child of John and Lena Weber. Mary was a year older than Frances, and Thomas was born when Frances was eight years old. Her great-grandparents owned a 160-acre farm with apples, peaches, grapes, and blackberries, they lived on the farm. In Chillicothe, Frances had to start school at the tender age of five. Mary was in the first grade, but the walk to school took her by a cemetery, which terrified her. So, to keep her company on her daily journey, Frances accompanied Mary on her walk, and forced her to start school earlier than expected. Her father, John, served in France in World War I and suffered from mustard gas exposure. Due to his ill health, the Weber family moved to the state of Washington, where they met up with extended family members already settled in the Yakima Valley. John, Lena, and their family resided in the fruit rich area of Cowiche. Frances enrolled in Cowiche High School where she met her future husband, Harold Amos.
Frances and Harold married on October 15, 1945, while Harold, serving in the Navy on a submarine during World War II, was on leave. Two months later in December of 1945, Harold was honorably discharged. Harold and Frances settled in Cowiche, WA where they farmed until 1972. Together they raised five children, Jo Frances (Joy), Joseph Gerald (Gerry), John Arthur, Gery Gene and James Gail.
Frances was a devoted wife and mother. She was a member of the St. Peters Catholic Church, and active in a local club called the Ridotta Club. She was a great cook, loved fried chicken, made the best coleslaw, pies and cake! She loved to cook for the many friends and family picnics that were organized every summer. Her many crocheting projects were never from a pattern and she loved to play dice where she often won. Her many close friends and relatives have preceded her in death, but Frances remained happy and always kind.
She is survived by her daughter Joy Stillwaugh (Don) of Meridian, ID., Gerald (Gerry) Amos (Christine) of Yakima, John Amos (Cindy) of Nampa, ID, Gery Amos (Sherry) of Salem, OR and James Gail Amos (Joan) of Cowiche. 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren.
