John Christopher Robinson was born as an only child on May 28, 1921 in a small town named Jacob, Florida to Blanche Ola Russell and Joe Robinson. At 17 years old, he decided to enlist in the army. These were the times of the great depression. Life was hard and jobs were scarce. As young as he was, he knew and understood that by enlisting in the military, this would give him the opportunity to provide and take care of his beloved mother. He never told his mother of his plans, because he knew, she would stop him from going, so with immense courage and determination he made the decision to leave. In the early morning hours on a pitch-black dark country road, he walked 10 miles to the military station. He sung to himself while he walked and with a strong belief in God, he knew he would be ok. Fortunately, on the way a kind gentleman gave him a dollar and dropped him off at the nearest bus stop. Even though he was only 17 years old and needed to be 21 to enlist, he was initially turned down, but with his superior communication skills, he explained his heartfelt and poignant story of why he needed to be enlisted to the military secretary. With this, she enlisted him in the army as a volunteer. While in the Army, he was in World War II where he went and fought in Germany, Casablanca, Italy and World War II was won. In 1945 he was discharged. He also attended Florida Memorial College and later re-enlisted in the Air Force from 1951-1954. He received the National Defense Service Mission Medal.
After his enlistment in the army, his distraught mother never knew what happened to her son. For some time, she frantically tried to find out what became of him. With great relief, she eventually received a letter from her son. From that point forward, most importantly he was able to provide, build a home and take care of his mother.
He married his first wife Bertha Mae Ramsey on December 27, 1953. After moving to Fort Lauderdale, Fl, over a period of 26 years the couple welcomed 5 children into their lives. His children and grandchildren remember John. C. Robinson as a kind gentle father who tried always to do the best he could and sacrificed so much for his children.
He worked in the security field as well as construction and the railroads. His last and main position was working for the US Postal Service where he remained for 16 years and retired at the age of 80.
He later married Letty Villanueva Robinson in 1986. They were married for 35 years until his passing. This period brought him great happiness and joy as they traveled the world together and enjoyed life.
John Christopher Robinson had an amazingly beautiful gifted singing voice and loved to sing for everyone especially at his birthday gatherings. He could have easily had a successful career in the music industry, but life and family were first for him. He was always compared to Harry Belafonte and Kellogg Turner of the Pilgrim Travelers gospel group. His voice was so eerily the same, you could not tell the difference when he sang or from the recording. He had a wonderful gift of communication and loved telling stories, fables, jokes and passages from the bible and listening and singing to his favorite music.
