Portland, ME – Albert Benjamin “Ben” Lothrop, 76, of Portland passed away on Monday, February 8, 2021 at Maine Medical Center. He was the former husband of Diane Dunphe was eighteen years before divorcing and was the companion of Esther Archibald.
He was born on May 2, 1944 in Wilton, ME a son of the late Roland and Frances (Weathern) Lothrop. He grew up in Wilton, attending local area schools and graduating from Wilton Academy and then from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in economics.
Ben worked as a janitor at a local school as well as in the Post Office.
He was actively involved in bowling, softball and basketball; and was a member of the bowling league at Colonial Bowling Center in Westbrook. He attended church weekly at the First Baptist Church of Westbrook and Portland.
Ben loved being outdoors, cats and writing poetry. He was also an avid reader and was a devoted fan to all the New England Sports teams. Spring and Fall were his favorite seasons and enjoyed walking, swimming and he was a great dancer and was even a member of a local square dancing club. He also greatly enjoyed the Maine Senior Games every year.
He is survived by his son Matthew B. Lothrop and his wife Amanda and their children Griffin K. and Declan L. all of Lisbon and his daughter Sarah A. Whitten and her husband Eric and their children Kristy A. Verrill, Elijah R. and Isaac J. all of Ossipee, NH. He also leaves his sister Susan Tracy and her children, Ben’s nieces and nephews, Melissa Russell, Larry Dustin, Steve Tracy and Peggy Wright all of the Wilton, ME area.
A private celebration of life will be held in the Spring.
