Polly was born in Temple, Texas on May 25, 1928 to parents Virgil & Elizabeth Gunn. Her mother passed away when she was 6 years old and Polly was later blessed with a loving stepmother, Chell Gunn. Polly graduated from San Angelo High School and attended college at Angelo State University, where she met the love of her life, Joe Bailey Chitwood, Jr. The two were married on September 3, 1947 after he returned home from duties in the South Pacific as a Navy Seabee during WWII.
While living in San Angelo, Polly & Joe’s first child, Rebecca, was born in 1948. Sadly, Rebecca passed away soon after her birth. They moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma where Joe attended school & graduated from Oklahoma A&M, now Oklahoma State University. Their daughter, Linda, was born in 1949. They moved to El Reno, Oklahoma and Polly gave birth to a daughter & son, Jo Ann (1951) and John (1952). The family later relocated to Abilene, Texas, where Polly took great joy in raising her children and working for West Texas Utilities as their office manager. In 1970, Joe received a job offer that brought Joe and Polly to Arlington, Texas. Polly began working for Tex-Star Plastics and after a long career retired as their office manager.
Polly & Joe were both active members at First Baptist Church of Arlington. In addition, they tirelessly gave back to the community as volunteers at Mission Arlington & Theater Arlington, where Polly ran the concession stand & Joe was an actor, singer, and set builder. Polly was also proud to serve as a member of the Arlington Woman’s Club.
Polly & Joe loved to dance, play bridge, go on cruises, and attend many baseball games together. Regardless of the activity, Polly made sure to find just the right outfit for the occasion. She also enjoyed having treats around to spoil her grandchildren and great grandchildren, as grandmothers are supposed to do! We will remember Polly as a blessed, joyful, and honorable person. Polly was known for putting great heart into everything she did, from loving her family to helping others in the community.
