Jan was a lifelong resident of Gardendale, Alabama. She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly sixty-three years, Harvey Fields; her two loving daughters, Jennifer Fields (Steve McGinty and son Alex McGinty) and Lauren Fields Gough (Steve Gough); her precious grandson, Fischer Harvey Gough; nephew, David Mitchell III; niece, Gina Posey Bain; and great-niece, Tiffany Mitchell Wiginton.
Jan was a graduate of Mortimer Jordan High School, class of 1953, where she met and fell in love with her high school sweetheart and one true love. Because of being double promoted, she graduated a year earlier than her peers, and at age seventeen she became the registrar of Gardendale School. She married Harvey August 23, 1958, at West End Church of Christ in Birmingham. She was an amazing mother who always put her children first, and she was a very proud and adoring grandmother. She was an indispensable partner in her husband’s business, A-1 Pest Control, for more than fifty years. She is a faithful member of the Lord’s church, and she worshipped at Mount Olive Church of Christ as long as she was able. Caring for people in need was an important part of her life. She and her sister provided superior care for their mother for many years. She was a breast cancer survivor and she bravely fought a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Quinton David Mitchell Sr. and Mary Alice Mitchell, her brother, David Mitchell Jr., and her sister, Jean Mitchell Posey. Jan is loved and missed by her family and her wonderful caregivers, Jennifer Goodson, Tina Harris, Julie Burr, and Keshia Reid, who alongside her daughter Jennifer, took exceptional care of her. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to them for their love and attentiveness.
The family extends a special thank you to Dana Lowery, Lisa Compton, and Dee Burgett of Comfort Care in Jasper for the love and support they have given to both Jan and Harvey for many years, and to UAB Gereatric Housecall, especially Kathleen Shields and Chaeli Lawson, for always answering our calls and providing excellent care.
A private ceremony will be held at Oakwood Memorial Gardens in Gardendale on Saturday, February 20, 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation are appreciated. It is fitting that she left us for her heavenly home on Valentine’s Day as love was her most defining quality.
