An accomplished woman, she was a graduate and valedictorian of Eleanor McMain High School in New Orleans. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Louisiana State University, where she had been an active student and member of the Mortar Board and Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. She also received recognition as a charter volunteer to East Jefferson General Hospital. She was a member of the New Orleans Geological Auxiliary, The East Jefferson General Auxiliary, Friends of Lafreniere Park, the Southern Hearing and Speech Foundation, the Jefferson Historical Society (Charter member), the Christian Women’s Exchange, the Women’s Guild of the New Orleans Opera Association, Heart Ambassadors, the Cancer Crusaders, Ladies Leukemia League, Friends of Culicchia Neurological Research Foundation, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services. She accomplished great things wherever she gave her service and was awarded The New Orleans Geological Auxiliary Special Service Award, the East Jefferson General Hospital Auxiliary Great Lady Award, and the Institute for Human Understanding Ten Outstanding Persons (TOP) Award.
Since 1969, she had been a member of the Metairie Woman’s Club and was even awarded the 1984-1985 Outstanding Woman Award for her philanthropy and contributions to the community, particularly as horticulture chairman, vice president, and president of Fairfield Park Gardens. During her active years within the club, she held many chairmanships and offices, performed community services, championed special projects, and was chiefly involved in many philanthropic causes. She was able to leave an indelible mark on local libraries, Lafreniere Park (of which she was a charter member), The East Jefferson General Hospital, schools for special needs students, and various other causes and charities dear to her heart.
Beverly is survived by her husband of 69 remarkable years, Carlo C. Christina; her children, Thomas B. Christina (Jane) and Michael A. Christina; grandchildren, Thomas J. Christina, Amanda M. Christina Gruber (David), Jessica J. Christina Moskowitz (Harry), Cameron Christina and Connor Christina; great-grandchildren, Kandice Christina, Preston T. Gruber and Jemma J. Moskowitz; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Nolan Burris and Pearl Burris; her son, Robert D. Christina and brothers, Nolan Burris and John Burris.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service to be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70124 on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow the services at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
