Phyllis C. Whales, the daughter of Annette Lathan was born March 23, 1957 in Pioneer, Louisiana. Unknown to many Phyllis was born with a heart disorder and life expectancy not to surpass the age of 10 however, God had other plans.
A graduate of Clark High School, Phyllis went on to work at Aetna Life Insurance until the company relocated.
Phyllis accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She joined and was baptized at Pilgrim Rest MBC in December of 1983. Phyllis was dedicated to the mission of educating, evangelizing and encouraging others to advance in the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. She loved her church family and showed it by being an active member regularly attending and teaching Sunday School and VBS, Director/Teacher of Youth Department – Red Circle & Sunshine Bank, Member of the City-Wide Usher Board, Secretary of the Sr. Usher Board and Mission- Naomi Circle.
Phyllis was an avid competitor and a true kid at heart. She participated in bowling, loved a great Laker game and was able to attend her 1st 49ers football game. She did not miss a Ringling Brother Circus, but her favorite pastime was a great Scrabble and Taboo board game. Phyllis did not limit herself due to her medical condition, flying from the west coast to the east coast visiting and vacationing with family; to cruising the Pacific Ocean, kayaking in the marina and Jet Skiing in Cabo, Mexico.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her sister, Edith Loletha Whales. She leaves to cherish her memories, mother, Annette Lathan; brothers Pierre Whales and Tyrone Lathan; sister, Regina Poole. She will be missed by many surviving loved ones to include children she helped nurture, nieces, nephews and her Sunday School students.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the family strongly encourages friends to attend the viewing on May 13th as the service at the church on May 14th will have capacity limits. Family is encouraged to wear shades of blue and arrive for the processional into the church service by 10:40am on May 14th.
