Gilbert is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bonnie Angus Doubleday; daughters Deborah O’Shea (Joseph), Elizabeth Doubleday, and Jennifer Provenzano (Louis, Jr.); son Gilbert R. Doubleday, Jr.; sister Myrna Gemell; grandchildren Megan and Michael O’Shea, Simon and Brooke Provenzano as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother Eugene Doubleday, Jr.
He graduated from De La Salle High School. Gilbert started working at the age of twelve. He owned and operated for 30 years a concrete company, which consumers for his quality of work sought him out. He was proud to have engineered the Holiday Inn on Royal St. and the Freeport McMoRan Building. He excelled in many sports such as track, basketball, baseball and tennis. He was honored that his fifth great uncle, Abner Doubleday invented baseball.
Gilbert loved casinos especially the Treasure Chest. He was affectionately known as the “King of One Liners”, never missing the opportunity to have fun. Caring and kind he always helped others in need. He loved and adored his children and grandchildren. Gilbert’s love was contagious and authentic and will permanently be felt by all who knew him.
We are thankful for the wonderful care provided by Dr. Alton Sartor, Karen Spencer, NP, Charlotte Manogue CTS and all the caring medical staff at Tulane Cancer Clinic. Also, special thanks to Dr. Frank Wilklow, Dr. Sergio Schabelman and Dr. Gary Braedt.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the Chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 12:00pm. Visitation beginning at 10:0am Interment will take place in Metairie Cemetery.
