Joseph Anthony Belowch Jr., known by many by his professional name Sonny Owens, passed away on Monday, September 6, 2021, at the Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital, Port St Lucie, from COVID at the age of 78.
He was born August 17, 1943, in Suffern, NY, the son of the late Joseph Anthony and Elizabeth (Wood) Belowch Sr. He attended Spring Valley High and fire classes at Indian River Community College. He received his First Responder Certification and was CPR Certified. He was a member of the Spring Valley Volunteer Fire Dept. and a member of the Jensen Beach Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a board member for MISS Organization (Mothers and Infants Strive for Success). He shared stories about his fire calls and the time he delivered a baby!
He had resided in Spring Valley, NY; Seaside Park, NJ; Lodi, NJ; Hagerstown, MD; Nashville, TN; Winston-Salem, NC; and in Florida - Hallandale, Hollywood, Ft. Pierce, Jensen Beach and Port St. Lucie. While in Spring Valley, NY, he would spend time visiting his grandmother in Suffern, NY where she would grow her own vegetable garden that they loved to pick from. Picking apples in the orchards in Rockland County. Played drums in the marching band, played guitar with his band at Club 15 & The Riverboat, plus many other places.
A man of many talents, he also worked as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. He worked for the State of Florida DOT, Dickerson, Gator Transport, WR Grace and Hudson Landscaping and Sod.
A lover of music, he played guitar and sang Country, Old Rock and Roll 50's 60's & 70's. He really loved playing Facebook DJ bringing memories back to all who listened. He loved sharing his memories about where he played music, the celebrities he played with and met, and the experiences he had in Spring Valley, Seaside, Nashville, Winston-Salem and Florida. He was also a caring family man especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 48 years, Caren Gail Sarrel Belowch; children, Edward Joseph Hayes and fiancée Heather LoPresti, Todd Edward Belowch and wife Amy LaBelle Belowch, and Gina Leigh Belowch; grandchildren, Cooper Owen Belowch and Cody Oliver Belowch; his nieces and nephews: Carolyn Spohler, Robert Spohler, Chuck Gannon and Debbie Spohler Wilson; his Sarrel nieces and nephews, sister-in-law Susan Sarrel Feingold and husband Mitch, Marla Sarrel, Ronald Sarrel and wife Gina, Lloyd Sarrel and wife Keely, Fran Sarrel, Rachel Sarrel Schmeltz and husband David and Michelle Feingold; great nieces and nephews, Wade Boucher, Dylan Spohler, Renee Spohler, Michael Gattuso, Jessie Wilson, Eric Sarrel, Jacob Sarrel, Julia Sarrel, Ava Sarrel, Matthew Sarrel, Erin Schmeltz and Sarah Schmeltz as well as his numerous friends that he loved so very much.
He was predeceased along with his parents, his in-laws Louis Sarrel and Frances Kaufman Sarrel, sister Joan Gannon, in-laws Seymour Sarrel, Enid Sarrel, Robert Sarrel, Charles Sarrel and Helen Sarrel, nieces and nephews: Carolyn Spohler, Bart Sarrel and Louis Sarrel.
