Millie was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was the youngest of four children. She married Leo
Friedmann in 1950, and with their two sons, Ira and Jay, moved to Los Angeles in 1960. They
had the kind of marriage that many hope to have, but only the lucky achieve. Through the good
and bad, they remained in love and steadfast in their commitment to each other.
After Lee passed, Millie filled the next three decades with new experiences and people. She
had a wealth of friends and again found love and romance. She became a truly independent
woman.
Millie was beautiful. She possessed grace and style and was always in fashion. She enjoyed
helping others and was recognized by The City of Los Angeles for years of volunteering at the
Canoga Park Senior Center. In her youth, she danced on Broadway and her love of dance
stayed with her until her mind could no longer keep up with her body. Though she endured a
slow cognitive decline, she never let that define her. During the last five years, people that she
met were struck by her kindness and her ability to express joy and happiness.
The day before she passed, she was laughing and joking. Millie will be remembered for her
smile, her warmth, her intelligence and strength.
She is survived by her eldest son, Jay.
She also had a way with words.
COMES THE DAWN
By Millie Friedmann
After a while, you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,
You learn that love doesn’t mean leaning
And company doesn’t mean security,
You learn kisses aren’t contracts
And presents aren’t promises.
You begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open
With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child,
You learn to build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow’s ground is uncertain for plans
And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight
After a while, you learn
That even sunshine burns if you get too much
So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul,
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers,
You learn that you really can endure
That you really are strong
You really do have worth
You learn and learn
With every goodbye, you learn
