Harvey Montague died peacefully in his home in Raleigh surrounded by his family on Thursday night, November 4th, 2021.
Harvey was born in Knightdale to Edwin Joseph and Hilda Talley Montague. He graduated from Knightdale High School and attended North Carolina State University. Harvey was a man of bold faith, a devoted husband, and a loving brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was also a friend and mentor to many. He served in the National Guard as a helicopter mechanic. His love for building began at T.A. Loving Construction which started a long career as a builder and developer in central North Carolina. In 1963, he started his own company, Montague Building Company. He built countless houses and 35 churches in his earlier career until he began to focus on development in the mid 1980’s. He was a charter member of Macedonia Baptist Church and the Apex Rotary Club. He served on the Board of Directors of WakeMed Hospital for 15 years serving as Chairman for three years; Wake Technical Community College for 20 years serving as Chairman for two years; and BB&T. He served on the Board of Trustees at the YMCA of the Triangle; the North Carolina Baptist Foundation as Vice Chairman for two years; and Gardner Webb University. He was an instrumental part of multiple buildings in the community including WakeMed Raleigh, WakeMed Cary, WakeMed Healthplex in Apex, Montague Hall at Wake Tech, and the Kraft Family YMCA.
Harvey is survived by his wife of 63 years, Texanna Jones Montague, son, Harvey Lynwood Montague, Jr. and wife, Jennifer, son, Bryant Montague and wife, Sherri; grandchildren, Harvey Lynwood Montague III and wife, Annie, Dexter Montague, Trevor Montague, Tyler Montague, Caroline Pope, Collin Pope, Braxton Montague and wife, Marisa, and Lizzie Montague; great-grandson, Jones Montague; sister, Lynda Pittman.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother, and brother, Hubert Montague.
His visitation will be on Tuesday, November 9th from 4 to 7 pm at Macedonia Baptist Church, 7100 Holly Springs Road, Raleigh, NC 27606 and the Memorial Service will also be held at Macedonia Baptist Church on Wednesday, November 10th at 2 pm. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Macedonia Baptist Church, WakeMed Foundation, Wake Tech Community College Foundation, or the YMCA of the Triangle.
