Everyone knew her as Betty; she was preceded in death by her husband Roger of 39 years, her brother Jack Affleck, and her parents. She is survived by her son Roger (Diane) Engelbart of St. Louis, MO, grandson Christopher (Elizabeth Fergus) Engelbart of St. Peters, MO and precious great-grandson Nolan.
Betty was born in Hastings, Nebraska April 27, 1925; as a young child she moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she spent most of her life. A talented artist, she graduated from Paseo High School and had hoped to enter the field of fashion design. World War II delayed her plan and she served with the American Red Cross. After the war, she was employed at the former City National Bank &Trust in Kansas City where she met her husband. Together they were long-time members of Immanuel Lutheran Church at 4205 Tracy; the church was the center of their lives, and she was involved in many of its committees and activities. Betty also worked 13 years for the American Field Service, an organization that places international exchange students with American host families. She was host mother to Karl G. Wiklund, an AFS student from Sweden, and he was a beloved second son to her. She extensively researched her family genealogy and was proud of her Scottish heritage. Betty was a member of the Heart of America Genealogical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Colonists. She loved reading and language, and she always had a book or a crossword puzzle at hand.
Betty moved from Kansas City to St. Louis in 2005 to be near her family. Thank you to the dedicated staff of Community Care Center of Lemay and Hope Hospice for their compassionate care during the last nine years of her life. A very special thank you to Luetta Buchholz and Candy Novak for their enduring friendship and support; they kept Betty up to date on Immanuel and Kansas City, the two communities that she loved so much.
We love you Mom, and we are better people because you loved us.
“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” – 1 John 4:16
