Shannon Lee Backman, 61, died, on Saturday, October 9, 2010, in Mobile, Alabama, after a brief illness. Shannon was born September 24, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa, and was a long time resident of both Mobile and Montgomery, Alabama. She was married to Ret. Lt. Col. Stephen M. Backman. Shannon was a Registered Nurse who worked Oncology for many years assisting those who struggled with the same disease that ultimately took her from us. After retirement from her career, Shannon traveled with Steve and was executive director of WISE, Women in Search of Equity for Military in Divorce, based in Annapolis, Md. Her work helped many military service members resolve contentious divorce and retirement issues. Shannon’s diligent effort culminated in having a bill passed by the Congress and signed into law by President Bill Clinton. She is survived by her children, Samuel Paul Routh (Angie); Alison Colby Kennedy; Corey Backman Nicolosi (Paul), and Robert Backman (Ruby); grandchildren, Kaylee Routh and Ava Nicolosi; sisters, Jody Herring (David) and Lecky King; brother, Paul Braddy, and a host of loving relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents John and Floy Braddy and her brother in law, Don King. The family will greet friends and family for visitation on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home in Montgomery, AL. There will be a graveside service immediately following. The family asks, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to The American Cancer Society or Allen Memorial Home in Mobile, AL.
