We regret to announce the death of Mary Margaret "Maggie" Burke, which occurred at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, March 16. Born on September 12, 1915, in Little Mabou (Colindale), she was a daughter of the late John William and Mary (MacDonald) Burke.Maggie was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Hugh,Halifax; Angus William, Colindale; and Alexander (in childhood); sisters, Margaret (John Hugh) MacInnis, West Mabou; and Catherine Morris, Colindale; and nephew, John William (Karen) MacInnis, West Mabou.
She is survived by her brother, Thomas (Ena) Burke, Niagara Falls; sister-in-law, Eileen Burke, Halifax; brother-in-law, Sandy Morris, Baddeck, formerly Colindale; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, in whom she took a keen interest. Birthdays and other special occasions were always carefully minded with thoughtful gestures that will not be forgotten by them. Though she had no children of her own, she was like a second mother /grandmother for them.
Always hard-working and joyful, Maggie spent her whole life serving others, especially when she saw a need. She will be sorely missed by her grand-nephews and grand-niece, Trevor, Shane and Barbara, to whom she was a great help and comfort when they lost their parents at a young age.
Maggie was a woman of great faith in God and devotion to our Blessed Mother. Among the last things she did were to go to confession, receive Holy Communion and pray the rosary (on her knees, as she did every night). She was a life-member of the CWL and a loyal member of St Peter’s Parish, Port Hood for 95 years. Visitation will be held on Sunday March 20 in Port Hood and Area Resting place from 2-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. from St Peter's Church, Port Hood with Fr. Victor Ozoufunanya officiating.Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Peter's Parish cemetery Fund, Port Hood.
