Gerald B. Carroll of Raleigh, 79, passed away June 3, 2011 after a brief illness. A native of Bronx, NY, Gerry was the son of the late Bernard & Mary Ann Carroll. Gerry was a 1950 graduate of All Hallows High School in the Bronx and received a B.A. in Business Administration from St. John’s University in 1961. He was employed as a personnel manager for Otis Elevator Company in New York and New Jersey, and he retired from a position as a benefits manager for Arthur Young & Company in New York in 1986.
Gerry contracted polio at the age of 4, resulting in paralysis in both legs. Through determination, surgeries & therapies administered by his father, Gerry was able to walk again. The long-term effects of post-polio syndrome caused Gerry to endure many ailments and surgeries throughout his life. His fighting spirit allowed him to overcome these setbacks and be an inspiration to all who knew him.
Gerry was a 25 year resident of Old Bridge, New Jersey. He was an active parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church where he served in the choir and as a catechism teacher for many years. He also ran a social group for homebound & handicapped people in the area. After moving to Raleigh in 1998, Gerry volunteered in various administrative duties at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. Gerry was also active in post-polio survivor groups in central New Jersey and North Carolina.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Angela (nee Mitorotonda), his daughter Mary McKeveny, son-in-law Kenneth McKeveny and grandsons Ian and Alexander, all of Raleigh. He is also survived by his sister Maureen Heaney and her husband John, his brother Thomas Carroll and his wife Patricia.
His family would like to thank the staff at the Hospice of Wake County for the wonderful care he received there.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 5, 2011 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd, 27609. There will be a Funeral Mass on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 1 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 11401 Leesville Rd, 27613.
