Christ, on December 14, 2011. Our beautiful and precious wife, mother, and grandmother
passed away at the age of 87, following a rich and full life of love and compassion for her
family and friends.
Laura was born in Lawton, Oklahoma on February 9, 1924 to John G. and Lottie G. George.
Her family later moved to Tyler where she graduated from Tyler High School in 1940. She
attended Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia and Southern Methodist University in Dallas,
Texas. leaving college to join the war effort by working at Camp Fannin in Tyler, Texas. She
met her future husband, [ud Adams, who was stationed at Camp Fannin as an infantry
instructor. Laura and [ud were married on November 10, 1944, in Christ Episcopal Church,
Tyler, the beginning of a 67 year marriage of devoted love, happiness and faith in God and
in each other.
Following her husband's combat tour of duty in the Philippine Islands and occupation of
Japan during World War II, Laura and [ud began their family with the birth of their
daughter, Anne in 1947, and the births of their sons, [ud, Jr. in 1951 and David in 1961.
Their children received unconditional parental love and Laura, with the responsibilities of
a stay-at-home mom, taught her children well. Laura and [ud, with the Lord's guidance,
saw their children grow to be respected, successful adults. Preparing her children for adult
life was important to Laura.
Laura was a long time devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church in Tyler, having taught
in its children's Sunday school, being active in the church's Altar Guild. women's bible
classes, and many other church-related activities. She was a long-time active and
sustaining member of the Junior League of Tyler, as well as being a charter member of The
Festival Garden Club, where she won several awards for flower arrangement and
presentation. She also was an avid student of the musical arts, being an accomplished
pianist and a member of the Tyler Junior College sponsored opera educational program. In
short, Laura Elizabeth was a beautiful lady known for her kindness to others, for her truly
wonderful sense of fun and good humor, always there to help and assist others and she
truly possessed a quality of vivacity. She was always there in times of need.
Laura is survived by her husband, Jud, her three children Anne Adams Gorry and
husband, Tony and their two daughters, Kate and Meghan, Ralph J. (Buz) Adams Jr. of Tyler,
and David Adams and his family. In addition, she is survived by her brother-in-law, John D.
Adams and wife, Jean, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and sisters-in-law, Edith George of
Houston and Irene George of Fairfax, Virginia as well as nine nieces and nephews and their
children. Laura was preceded in death by her brothers, Wiley R. George of Houston and
Robert L. George of Fairfax, Virginia.
Services to celebrate the life of Laura Elizabeth George Adams will be held at Christ
Episcopal Church, 118 S. Bois d'Arc Avenue, Tyler on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 2:30 p.m.
conducted by the Reverend David Luckenbach, followed by a reception in the church's
Guild Hall for the family to receive friends.
