Adolph G. (Chris) Christensen was born on February 13, 1934, in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. He departed this life on January 19, 2012 in San Antonio, Texas. Close family members affectionately knew him as “Duffy”. His closest friends and acquaintances knew him as “Chris” and everyone knew him as “Chief”.
“Chris” was a career military man who entered the Army in June 1951 and later transferred to the U.S. Air Force (USAF). He retired from the USAF in February 1978 having attained the top enlisted rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He held positions in logistics and education; most notably, helping to launch the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF). As a role model for education, he received his associate’s degree from the CCAF and a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland. He attended various military schools and was stationed at numerous bases in the U.S. and the Pacific. His military awards include the Bronze Star, three Meritorious Service medals, three AF Commendation Medals, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Army Commendation Medal. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Chapter 17. “Chris” was diagnosed with kidney failure prior to his retirement from the military and was a dialysis patient for over 30 years.
“Chris” was a loving husband and father who enjoyed gatherings with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and May Agatha Christensen, sisters, Mildred and Arlene and his two eldest sons, Douglas and Daniel. His surviving siblings include Hans (Alda), Carl, Ada May, Anna, George, Betty, Grace and Helen. He is survived by, Louise, his wife of 56 years, their five children, Joann (Christopher Sr.), Diane (Cornelius), Darryl (Sherry), Dwayne (Renee), Ruth and daughter-in-law, Cynthia. He also leaves sixteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. A visitation will be held Tuesday January 31, 2012 from 5:00 until 9:00 PM and funeral services will be Wednesday February 1 at 10:00 AM at Colonial Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors.
