Genell "Jean" Messervy, 80, passed away early Sunday morning, August 19, 2012 after losing her battle with liver cancer that was just diagnosed in May. Her family who loved her so much surrounded her. She was born December 13, 1931 in Garfield, GA. She was a member of Sandy Springs United Methodist Church for 35 years. She was predeceased by her father, Sam Grimes and mother, Etta Proctor Grimes Petrakis, two sisters, Dorothy Oglesby and Trauby Manning. She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Theodore "Ted" Messervy, two brothers Darriel "Bud" and Dannie Grimes of Charleston, SC; three children, Brenda Benoist and husband Steve, Roswell, GA, Cynthia Pederson and husband Pete, Va. Beach, VA and T. Alex Messervy and wife Tara, Cumming, GA; five grandchildren, Scott Perry, Steven Benoist, Andrea Labouchere, Shaun Boswell, and Kevin Boswell' two great-grandchildren Kayla and Addy and two on the way. Also, many nieces and nephews. Jean was a beautiful person that was loved by so many. She retired from St. Joseph Hospital as a Patient Care Technician. She was a beauty queen contestant in Florida and member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was also a bowling champion in North Carolina and the Marshall Islands and also played on a Women's Softball team in Kwajalein, Marshall Islands as their pitcher. She will always be remembered as the best baker and cook in the world. She was always asked to make cakes for all occasions. Two of her greatest passions were shopping and traveling. She took her first cruise on her 50th Anniversary, which was the beginning of many. She was a loving and caring person, who lived her life with dignity, grace and generosity. Her words of encouragement will forever be missed by her family and friends, especially her friends of the Joy Class of her church. Viewing will be Tuesday, August 21, 2012 from 6-8:00 pm at Sandy Springs Chapel 136 Mt Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at 11:00 am at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church, 85 Mt Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
