Funeral services for Donald G. Ament, 83, of Killeen will be held Monday, September 17, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen with full military honors to follow at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Mr. Ament passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2012 in Temple.
Don was born on March 9, 1929 to William and Mary Ament in Johnstown, PA.
He joined the US Army at the age of 15 and served for over twenty years before retiring as a SFC in 1967.
He served during World War II and the Korean War. Don was not one to talk about his medals and awards. When asked by the family he would say, Oh I had numerous medals, award and yada, yada, yada. He always said it was a team effort. This one is for you Dad.
Don married the former Mary Frances Ruth and raised four children. He was the past Post Commander of VFW 3892 Harker Heights and Past District 14 Commander of the Texas Veterans of Foreign War and member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter S W Labombard 29.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Frances in 2009, a brother Bill Ament, a sister Barbara Haire, and sister Phyllis Ament.
He will be missed by his son, Donald Ament, Jr. of Killeen and daughters; Bonnie Tomczyk and husband Klaus of Killeen, Linda Ament of Killeen and Jeanette Ament of Killeen. A brother Phillip Ament of Rowlett, TX and a sister, Peg Bowers of Chambersburg, PA. Army Brother George Bybee of Oregon. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen on Sunday, September 16, 2012 from 6-8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Second Chance Animal Shelter of Killeen.
