Mr. Joe Downs age 87 passed away Sunday morning Oct. 7, 2012 after a long hospital stay. He was born in Shreveport, LA. He is survived by a loving wife of 64 years, Monique Allochis. They have five children who have been greatly loved and cherished by both parents; Shirley Dawson (Robert) of Scottsboro, AL; JoAnn Wakefield (Will R. Jr) of Springville AL; Charmaine Brown (John) of Pinson, AL; John L. Downs (Lona) of Clay, AL; and Linda Carter (Tom) of Harpersville, AL.
Fourteen grandchildren; Cheryl Thornton (Lynn); Brad Vines (Jennifer); Shannon Haston (Tim); and Bishop Dawson (Amber) all of Scottsboro; Tommy Waldrop (Kristy) of Helena; Terry Waldrop (Cindy) of Northport, AL; Billy Wakefield (Emily) of Ashville, AL; and Brady Wakefield (Carson) of Huntsville AL; Natalie Hinds (Nathan) of Springville, AL; Jay Brown of Pinson, AL; Daniel Brown (Ally) of Gordo, AL; Sarah Downs of Auburn, AL; Roxanne Neason of Trussville, AL; and Dominique Neason of Tuscaloosa, AL.
Nineteen great grandchildren: Christian Gray, Dillon, Adyson and Matlyn Thornton; Wimberly and Windsor Haston; Carson Vines and Alivia Dawson all of Scottsboro, AL; Nicole and Alaina Waldrop of Helena, AL; Max and Landon Waldrop of Alabaster, AL;Delaney Sue and Jack Rice of Northport, AL; Will and James Wakefield of Ashville, AL; Cole, Graham and Eli Hinds of Springville, AL.
Mr. Downs is also survived by his younger brother, Jack P. Downs (Flora) of Lexington, KY. He also has two French sisters-in-law whom he and his wife assisted in coming to the United States – Carmen Lai (Pierre) and Henrietta Scarcliff (Glenn) of Mobile and Fairhope, AL respectively.
Mr. Downs worked for Wm.B.Riley Company selling Luzianne/Blue Plate products for 44 years. He is a graduate of Montevello University and Samford University holding a masters degree in Marketing and Economics. He owned and operated Downs tours travel agency which allowed him and his wife to travel all over the world. He was a true patriot and served in WWII as a Navy Seabee. He was a deacon at Hilldale Baptist Church and a devoted Christian.
His greatest loves in life were God, His world, his wife, Monique, and his very large family. He will be greatly missed and always remembered…. We love you Big Daddy.
Funeral service will be Tuesday October 9, 2012 at Hilldale Baptist Church at 2:00 P.M. with interment to follow in New Prospect Cemetery in Chalkville. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 Noon until service time on Tuesday.
