Claude Lee Barco, of Raleigh, NC, passed away at his home on Saturday, October 13, 2012. Lee was born in Gainesville, Florida on October 12, 1946 and is predeceased by his mother, Betty Sue Hopkins Krueger and his father, Claude Keigwin Barco, Jr.
A 1965 graduate of Glynn Academy in Brunswick, GA, he married his high school sweetheart, Kathryn "Kitty" Causey Barco, originally of Brunswick, GA. Lee and Kitty were married for 45 years and together they have two children, Christopher Rivers Barco (Cynthia Floyd Barco) of Orlando, FL and Kathryn "Ryn" Collins Barco Atkinson (George Douglas Atkinson, Jr.) of Raleigh, NC. Lee was affectionately known as "Pop" by his two grandchildren, Jack Douglas Atkinson and Lily Kathryn "Lily Kate" Atkinson, both of whom will miss him dearly. He is also survived by his sister, Susan Barco Parker of Trussville, AL, several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Lee was a 1970 graduate of the University of Georgia, much to the dismay of his grandfather, father, uncle and cousins, all of whom attended the University of Florida. He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree and received many honors for his academic accomplishments. Lee was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the Gamma Sigma Delta Society. He began his career in the dairy industry with Pet Dairy in the summer of 1967 and had recently retired from his position of Director of Ice Cream Operations for Land-O-Sun Dairies in Hickory, NC, thus, working his entire life for one company.
Known for his intelligence and wit, friends and family will also remember Lee as a devoted husband, a wonderful father, a proud grandfather, a hard worker and a true friend to many.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 17th at 2:00 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home located at 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC. The family will receive relatives and friends immediately following at the Ivy Hall Club House located at 4701 Ivy Crest Court, Raleigh, NC.
