George Simmons Melton, age 92, passed away on October 23, 2012, in Gainesville, Florida, at his residence at The Village. He was born in Pineville, Florida, on July 26, 1920, the oldest son of George and Addie Mae Melton. He met his wife, Christine Burdett Melton, at the University of Georgia and they were married for 60 years until her death in 2003.
He was commissioned into the United States Air Force in 1942 and proudly served as a flight navigator and Major who trained during World War II and actively fought in the Korean War. His career with the USAF ended in 1962 and he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to live in the area of Sandy Springs where his wife's family resided. He then began a 23 year career as a communication sales representative for Motorola. He was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldawgs and Atlanta Braves.
Survivors include his daughter, Christine M. Lyman (Tommy) of Gainesville, FL, granddaughter, Leah L. Grove (Kyle) of Boone, NC, sister, Doris Sims, nephews, Bill Sims, Randy Sims, and niece, Sabra Sparks of Dalton, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine B. Melton, and his brother, Ralph R. Melton.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at The Village and Haven Hospice of Gainesville, Florida. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be sent to The Braille and Talking Book Library, 421 Platt Street, Daytona Beach, FL 32114.
A graveside service will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday, October 27, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Arlington Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Williams-Thomas Funeral Home, Gainesville, Florida, and The Sandy Springs Chapel, Atlanta, Georgia.
