Lyle was a wonderful husband, father, poppie, uncle and friend and is in the hands of our loving God. Lyle was born on January 7, 1940 in Lockport, New York, and died on December 4, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Nell (Rice) Dornan; his mother Frances Campbell; his three daughters, Dina Stom of Friendswood, Texas, Karen Branham and husband Mark of Friendswood, Texas, and Tammy Baskind and husband Darryl of Pearland, Texas; his six grandchildren, Jacob Dornan Stom, Brittany Branham Clickner and husband Drake, Benjamin Nathaniel Lyle Branham, Chase Stom, Tyler and Daylyn Baskind; and two great-grandchildren, Caden and Conner Lyle Clickner. He is preceded in death by his father Samuel Dornan, his step-father Thomas Campbell, his two step-brothers Harlen and Pete Campbell and his step-sister Sue Campbell Alford.
Lyle retired on May 9, 1993 after 27 years from IBM Corporation (with whom the family was transferred many times; hence his fond nickname for the company was I’ve Been Moved!) He then went to work at GHG for another 10 years doing the same job as he did with IBM.
Lyle enjoyed “piddlin” around the house and for many years enjoyed “tinkerin” with cars. While the girls were growing up, Lyle enjoyed boating, fishing and teaching the girls how to water ski. In recent years Lyle enjoyed working on his cabin near Lufkin and the many travels he and Mary Nell took both locally and abroad. Their most recent trip was to Scotland and Ireland in 2011 to celebrate their 50 wonderful years together. He especially enjoyed the travels they took with Mary Nell’s brothers, Charles Rice and wife Marita, and Tony Rice and wife Karen.
Lyle was a fabulous listener, encourager, and jokester. He had the gift of “gab” which he perfected in his later years! There was much laughter in our family. Lyle especially enjoyed his Father’s Day Gift and his Birthday Gift from his three daughters, in which he lovingly termed “my three beautiful daughter date nights”.
Lyle grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee where he graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1958. After high school, he attended TPI in Cookeville, Tennessee and University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Lyle joined the Air Force in 1962 and received an honorable discharge in 1966, and began working with IBM Corporation in Huntsville, Alabama in May of 1966.
Pallbearers will be Jacob Dornan Stom, Benjamin Nathaniel Lyle Branham, Chase Stom, Tyler Baskind, Drake Clickner, and Tommy Rice.
There will be a family graveside service at a later date at the Houston National Cemetery where he will be buried with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make donations in Lyle Dornan’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
