MINGO, Dudley Lorne — 98, born September 12, 1914, died January 3, 2013, in Halifax. Born in Tatamgouche, Dudley was a son of Allison and Ella Mae (Chambers) Mingo. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 65 years, Bernice (Tattrie); his daughter, Patricia; his grandson, Christopher (Pretty), and his sons-in-law, Rev. Calvin Pretty (Joyce) and Laurence Willetts, (Faye); his brothers, Carl and Harold and his sisters, Grace (MacDonald) and Marion (Holt). Dudley is survived by his daughters, Joyce (Pretty), Audrey (Vern Grantham), Donna (Eugene Tymchuk), Julia Langille, and Faye Mingo, as well as his friend, Rita O'Connell; his sisters, Kaye (Gerald Mackinnon) and Louise (Tattrie) and his brother, Ernest Mingo. Dudley also leaves 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dudley was a very practical man who lived life to the fullest. He worked hard, played hard, rested well, ate well, and exercised regularly. He had an incredible memory and mind up until his stroke last year. He even drove his car until then. He was well- known for his storytelling and had many to tell. He and his brothers grew up on a farm but developed one of the largest construction and manufacturing companies around during the 40s, 50s, and 60s. The companies were: Eastern Woodworkers, Eastern Contracting, and Eastern Manufacturing. They built most of the prefabs in Eastern Canada during those years, manufactured the first trailers and sectional homes in Eastern Canada and ran three building supplies stores, too. Eastern built the town of Gander in a seven and a half year period, a town at Lake Jeneen in Quebec, manufactured 175 barges during the war, army huts during the 50s, Mulgrave Park, the Law Building and mens residences at Dal, the prefabs on Bayers Road, 400 housing in Pictou for the war effort. They built the Mill Village Satelite Building, the Port Hawkesbury heavy water plant and too many more buildings in Atlantic Canada to mention here. Dudley's skills allowed him to "command" men, to be the skip of his team or the captain. He loved to dance and his cottage and his family were his oasis. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, January 5th and his funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 7, both in J.A. Snow Funeral Home on Lacewood Drive.
