Velma Marie (Scott) Atkins, 94, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013 in Wichita Falls. Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, January 31, 2013 in the chapel at Dutton Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Neal, Faith Baptist Church of Iowa Park, officiating. Graveside Services will follow at Highland Cemetery under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home in Iowa Park.
Velma was born March 18, 1918 in Teague, Texas to Robert Lee Scott and Eva Leona (Samford) Barge. She married George Atkins on August 14, 1948 in San Antonio, Texas and has lived in Iowa Park since 1962. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church of Iowa Park where she was very involved in her Sunday school class and anywhere she could find to serve in the church. She was a private duty caregiver who loved helping people in their time of need. At one point in time, she worked as a sales clerk at a local variety store. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and all of her siblings.
Velma is survived by her son, George Robert “Bobby” Atkins of Iowa Park; five grandchildren, Sage Wright of Wichita Falls; Lori Voie of Wenatchee, Washington; Rick Hughes of Barrow, Alaska; Virgle Hughes of Valdez, Alaska; and Joey Anderson of Columbia, South Carolina; five great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorials may be made to the Iowa Park Volunteer Fire Department, the Iowa Park Police Department, or to the Faith Baptist Church of Iowa Park Building Fund.
The family would like to thank all of those who have helped out over the years in showing their love and support to Velma and the family. Special thanks to Naomi and Johnny Bookout who have become more like family instead of friends; to Specialty Nursing for their help; and to Danny and Lewis Skinner, who have helped so much over the years in helping Velma when she needed it most.
