On February 13, 2013 Our dad, George Vernon Ray Sr. left this scene of action only to be in the arms of his Savior Jesus Christ. He passed away peacefully at his home due to complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 78 years old. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Saturday, February 16, 2013 at HOLLY HILL FUNERAL HOME, 3601 Old Jennings Rd, Middleburg, FL with Rev. Allen Yoder officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the chapel.
George was born in Jacksonville, Florida on April 8, 1934. He was the youngest of 7 children. George leaves behind his brother Nelson W Ray. He was shining shoes and selling newspapers on the streets of Jacksonville at the age of 8. He joined the US Navy at the age of 17 as a firefighter. He was stationed at Brownsville Base in California where he met and married his wife, Alicia Torres. He went to Jacksonville University and was an ordained minister in the faith of Jesus Christ. He worked for Ivy Steel & Wire Company for 43 years where he joined the company as a laborer. He advanced to the plant manager and retired in 1997. He was active in many sports imaginable and excelled at all. He especially loved the game of golf. Most important of all he loved the Lord with all his heart, mind and body. He was a great husband, dad and friend to many. He was a man of great integrity and character. He loved his wife of 49 years till her passing in 2002. He is the father of 6 children. One of which precedes him in death, Robert Nelson Ray Sr. He leaves behind only to see him again in heaven, 5 children and their spouses. Debbie & Lou Aragon, Mary & Chuck Scarborough, George Jr. & Corrine Ray, Andy & Gloria Ray and Faith Rebecca Shoemaker. George also leaves behind 29 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren with 2 great grandchildren on the way and 1 great-great grandson due in March. His children to love the Lord with all their hearts and that you cannot out give God. He lived by example.
