Ted passed away peacefully at the Carewest Fanning Centre on Monday, March 11, 2013. He was born in Stanmore, AB to Alice and Percy Bethell on June 25, 1924. Ted was predeceased by his partner for life, soulmate and wife, Edith, on December 17, 2012. Ted and Edith met in high school and married on November 18, 1944 and celebrated 68 years of marriage in 2012. Ted served in the Canadian Navy during WWII and upon his return, he and Edith began raising their family. In 1946, Ted began an enjoyable and successful 30 year career in the oil business with Canadian Superior Oil Co. During the last decade of his career, he did a great deal of international travel in which Edith was able to join him on several occasions. After his retirement in 1986, Ted and Edith enjoyed vacations to international destinations and spent six months fixing up their cottage in the Cotwolds, England and entertaining family there. The remainder of their retirement years were mostly spent between White Rock, BC where they delighted in the warmth of the West Coast in the winter and in Calgary during the summer months, ‘puttering’ around Dad’s favourite place on earth – their cabin at Ghost Lake. Ted loved golf and took pleasure in many happy times playing at both of his residences. He is survived by daughters Sharron (Bob) Blaine and Sue (Tom) Couchman; son Michael (Sharon) Bethell; seven grandchildren: Vicky, Janice, David, Erin, Katherine, Jayne and Matt; six great grandchildren: Paul, Mayah, Abigail, Elliott, Ava and Will; sister Gladys Guarascio and brother, Bill Bethell, all of whom mourn his passing. Ted had a passion for life, his family and his work. He will be lovingly remembered by all of his family, extended family and friends as a warm and enthusiastic host, loving husband, a great dad and mentor. A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Wednesday, March 20, 2103 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. The Family would like to thank the staff of 3 West at Carewest Fanning Centre and Dr. Kobus Stassen for their support and outstanding care during this past week and throughout Dad’s stay. A special thanks to Pat Greene at the Fanning whose kind attention and friendship with Dad meant so much to all of us this past year. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Kidney Foundation, 6007 1A Street S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 0G5.
