Graham R. MacKenzie, 84, of Marblehead, a retired Swampscott Fire Captain, passed away at his home on March 20, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Gertrude “Trudy” (Hall) MacKenzie with whom he shared 61 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Swampscott, Graham was the son of the late Robert and Bernetta May (Moore) MacKenzie. In 1946, he graduated from Swampscott High School and enlisted in the United States Army, where he served at the end of WWII. In 1952, Graham began his career as a Swampscott firefighter. After 35 years in the Fire Department, he retired at the rank of Captain and began working at the Peabody Museum of Salem. In his spare time, he was a member of the Philanthropic Lodge in Swampscott, the Aleppo Temple Shrine, and a member of the Oriental Band for many years. Known for his gregarious spirit, Graham loved starting conversations with people wherever he went. He also enjoyed summers in Maine, watching his grandchildren’s sports games and performances, reading and sharing stories from the newspaper, and being a member of the men’s walking group at Liberty Tree Mall. Graham loved his family fiercely and lived by the motto: “peace, love, and togetherness.”
Along with his wife, he is survived by three daughters: Lynne T. MacKenzie of Barrington, NH, Dawn L. MacKenzie of Marblehead, and Paige A. Dolan and her husband Mark of Strafford, NH; four grandchildren: Amanda, Ryan and his fiancée Jenna, Nicholas, and Brady Dolan; and one great-grandson, Cameron Dolan.
A funeral service will be held at the First Church in Swampscott, Congregational, 40 Monument Avenue on Monday, March 25 at 11AM. Interment to follow in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be held at the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead on Sunday from 3-7PM. A Masonic Service will begin at 4PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Graham’s memory to the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation, 348 Glen Road, Weston, MA 02493 or to the charity of your choice.
