A native of Norfolk, Va., Ron received his undergraduate degree from
Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC, and earned a master’s degree in
history from Old Dominion University in his hometown of Norfolk. He
served proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as a structural steel
detailer for more than 40 years.
A man of deep spiritual faith, Ron helped many others grow in their own
faith through his eloquence in speaking of God’s grace and by living an
exemplary life of a devoted Christian. He will always be remembered for
his wonderful sense of humor. The New York Yankees, the city of New
York, and his beloved Maxi held special places in his heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Elizabeth Sawyer, and
one brother, Richard Sawyer.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Susan Spears Sawyer, of
Chattanooga; his children and their families: son Matthew Sawyer of
Raleigh, NC; son Duane Sawyer, Elizabeth City, NC; daughter Kimberly
Dempsey of Virginia Beach, Va., son Ronald Henley of Va.; stepdaughter
Ashleigh Petet of Ringgold, Ga.; and sister-in-law Marsha Sawyer of
Chesapeake, Va.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 25, 2013 from 4-7pm at Chattanooga Funeral Home-North Chapel, and from 10-11 am on Tuesday, March 26,2013
Funeral service will be conducted at 11 am on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, in the funeral home chapel
Interment to follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Military Honors
