Gail Elizabeth Cooper Johnson of Killeen passed away on March 21, 2013 at a local hospital at the age of 79. She was surrounded by her children, her loving husband, and clergy at the time of her passing.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 from 6-8pm at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen. Funeral services will be held at 12:30pm, Wednesday, March 27, 2013 in the chapel of Crawford-Bowers with Pastor Ed Talley officiating. Interment will follow at 2:00pm at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen. Fellowship will take place at the New Sunset Community Church located at 814 W. Ave. C in Killeen at 3:00pm.
Gail Cooper Johnson was born in Warrendale, PA., the daughter of Barbara Estella Arbogast and Roy Siggins Cooper. She was a graduate of Saint Petersburg High School in Saint Petersburg, Florida.
In December 1951, Gail met a young soldier home on leave in Saint Petersburg, FL, by the name of Theron (Sonny) L. Johnson also from Saint Petersburg. He asked her to marry him and they wed on March 18, 1952. They celebrated their 61st anniversary this year.
Gail was a loving Mother, a wonderful wife and long time friend to many. She spend her life helping and serving others. She was in child care services for over 20 years caring for hundreds of children. She served as Girl Scout Troop Leader for over 10 years and was appointed Neighborhood Chairman for the Central Texas Bluebonnett Council of Fort Hood, Texas. Gail was active in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. She served as team captain for "Gail's Playful Pandas" and on the relay committee for several years. Gail was elected the Commander of the D.A.V.A. Unit 147 of Killeen, TX where she held the position for the past 21 years. She was also the Volunteer Coordinator for the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery for the past 8 years.
Gail was preceded in death by both of her parents and her brother, George Rogers of Reno, NV., and son in law Michael F. Stokes of Woodbridge, VA.
Gail is survived by the love of her life, Retired Sergeant Major Theron L. Johnson, husband of 61 years, her four children, Gail Ann Stokes of Winsor, VA., Susan Michele Denney (Frank) of Aransas Pass, TX., Roy C. Johnson (Brenda) of Killeen, TX., and Timothy L. Johnson also of Killeen, TX., and sister Penny Brown of Saint Petersburg, FL. She has 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Gail was loved by many and will be missed by all.
