Johnie was a member of New Salem Baptist Church, where he served as head usher and also served on several committees. He was a 60-year (lifetime) member of John Henry Pierce Masonic Lodge, held 32nd degree in Scottish Rite and was in Alhambra Shrine.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a Torpedoman in World War II.
Mr. Askew was preceded in death by his wife, Jean (Hall) Askew; parents, Robert and Verna Askew; sisters, Ruth Askew (Albert) Mullis, Chickamauga, GA, Robbie Askew (Paul) Parham, Chattanooga and June Askew (Bernard) Reed of Section, AL; brothers, Robert Askew Jr., Chattanooga; Jack (Lucille) Askew, Gadsden, AL, Bill (Virginia) Askew, Chicago, IL and O.S. “Sam” (Martha) Askew, Tiftonia, TN.
Survivors include a son, Jeff Askew of Chattanooga; daughter, Amy (Tim) Jollay of Soddy-Daisy; daughter-in-law, Donna Askew of Ringgold; granddaughter, Brittany Askew (Dustin) Carpenter, Brunswick, GA; granddaughter, Michala Askew of Ringgold; grandsons , Corey Kirksey of Chattanooga and Daniel Jollay, Soddy-Daisy.
The family will receive friends from 2 PM to 4 PM and 6 PM to 8 PM Wednesday at North Chapel. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:30 AM at North Chapel with Rev. Donald Vincent and Rev. Ted Painter officiating; burial in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.
