Walter Yale Durand, III, age 71 of Mayport, went to his heavenly home on July 10, 2013 after a brief illness. Walter was born December 2, 1942 in Washington D.C. to Walter and Sarah Virginia (Adamson) Durand, both deceased. His family later moved to Gainesville and then to Mayport, where he grew up in the fishing industry. He attended schools in the Beaches area and served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
After returning from Vietnam, he devoted his life to commercial shrimping as a way of supporting his family. It was his passion. Over his lifetime of fishing, he and his wife, Abbie, owned several boats including the PaPa Hobart, which his son, Charlie, is now running to continue his father’s legacy as a commercial shrimper. Walter was loved by all and was a great mentor to the younger generation of fisherman. He will surely be missed as he was one of the last older generation shrimpers around Mayport. He was a member of Mayport Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder for many years.
Walter is survived by the love of his life of 48 years, Abbie, his son, Charlie and granddaughter, Lacey; two sisters, Jane Delgado (Lou) from New York and Ann Rountree (Bert) of Jacksonville; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Charles Durand.
Family will receive friends from 6-8pm Sunday, July 14 at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd Jacksonville Beach, FL. A celebration of Walter’s life will be held at 10am Monday, July 15, also at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home in Jacksonville Beach. Interment will follow at Beaches Memorial Park, 1500 Main St. Atlantic Beach, FL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Walter’s name to Community Hospice of NE Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Rd. Jacksonville, FL 904-268-5200.
