James Lenard Dawson (Len) 90, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2013 after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. (est) Wednesday July 24th in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 3770 Hwy 431 N/280 W, Phenix City, Alabama, with the Reverend Bobby Pickrel ifficiating. Interment with military honors will be in Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12:00 noon until 2:00pm at the funeral home.
Mr. Dawson is proceeded in death by his parents James E. Dawson and Gussie M. Dawson, his wife Jessie Cook Dawson, his brother Howard S. Dawson & 3 sisters, Essie Dawson Cook, Ora Dawson Vann and Estelle Dawson McClendon and one grandson Mark Edward Newton.
Surviving is his son, Jerry L. Dawson and wife Linda Avery Dawson and his daughter, Linda Dawson Newton; Brother Andy Leo Dawson (Toby) and wife Sandra. Also surviving 3 grandchildren Theresa Dawson Burns (Gregory), Keith Dawson and Amy Newton Sikes (Don) and 6 great grandchildren Ashley, Katie and Noah Dawson, Shelby Sikes and Jackson & Ella Newton and several nieces and nephews.
Born in Barbour Co. Louisville, AL on May 8, 1923. He served in World War II as a corporal under General George S. Patton’s 3rd Army. He was discharged in December 1945 with several honorable decorations. He then married Jessie Rae Cook and settled in Smiths Station, AL where he was a member of Smith Station Baptist Church and they lived for the next 56 years before moving to Vidalia, GA in 2002.
