Jean Walkley Hairston went to be with her beloved husband on October 25, 2013 at the age of 84. Jean lived in Neptune Beach, FL. She was born in Atlanta, GA, daughter of Edwin Smith Walkley and Margaret Baugh Walkley.
Jean was educated at Sullivan College, Bristol, VA and the University of Georgia in Athens, GA and Harrison Daughn Business College of Atlanta, GA. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a BFA degree in Commercial Art & Advertising. She developed into a rather respectable artist.
She worked about 30 years raising 4 children and after her move to Neptune Beach in 1970 became affiliated with the Multiple Listing Service as a photographer for the Jacksonville Beach Board of Realtors. She later became the co-owner of the Wharf Pipe and Tobacco Shop in Atlantic Beach, FL, serving as an advisor.
She was active at Palms Presbyterian Church, serving on the Bell Ringer Choir for 10 years. She was also an active member of the Beaches Arts Center in Jacksonville Beach.
She is predeceased by her husband, Allen Wofford Hairston and her son, Allen Walkley Hairston of Jonesboro, GA. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Diane Gelles of Palm Coast, FL; sons, David Gene Hairston of Savannah, GA and Ralph Edwin Hairston and his wife Tina of Eatonton, GA; daughter-in-law Pam Hairston of Jonesboro, GA; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Jean’s celebration of life was held 2pm Wednesday, October 30 at Palms Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville Beach.
