Mr. Robert A. Dwyer of Lynn died in a local nursing home after a lengthy illness with his family at his side. He was the loving husband of Ethel L. (Pelley) Dwyer with whom he shared 52 years of marriage.
Robert was born in Lynn, son of the late Albert and Ruth Dwyer. He attended Lynn English High School for one year. He graduated from Milford High School; in Milford, CT Class of 1950 where he excelled on the basketball court.
Bob worked for the Daily Evening Item for 30 years as a graphic arts foreman. After his retirement from the Lynn Item he worked part time for sixteen years with the Lynn Police Department as a crossing guard.
In 1952 he joined the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Handpicked from boot camp he was assigned to the Third Infantry Regiment, Company A, the regiment stationed in Washington, DC as a member of the ceremonial honor guard at Arlington National Cemetery, also known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. After his honorable duties In Washington, DC, he was reassigned as medic in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on March 9, 1954 and held the rank of Sargeant.
Robert served as Past President of the East Lynn Pop Warner, a member of the Lynn English Boosters, Past President of Lynn Tech Boosters, former member of the East Lynn Little League Board, the Harry Agganis Committee, Past President of Typographical Union and a former member of the Gautreau Post of Lynn. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Lynn English Bulldogs play football and basketball, as well as the Patriots, Red Sox and Celtics.
In addition to his loving wife he is survived by two daughters Mary Petersen of Lynn, Jean Emmons and her husband Kenny of Hampton, NH, his sons John Dool, Nahant Police Chief Robert C. Dwyer and his wife Brenda and Michael A. Dwyer and his wife Lisa all of Lynn. One sister Beverly Lundsted of San Jose, CA. His grandchildren Amanda Dwyer, Jarred Dwyer, Mikey Dwyer and Brandon Dwyer, Terri and Ronny Petersen all of Lynn, Carrie, Melissa and Robert Gautreau, Holly and Kenny Emmons all of New Hampshire. Also survived by his 10 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and two close friends Thomas Reddy and Bill Dutch of Lynn and many nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Janet Gautreau and her late husband Robert and the brother of the late Barbara Machan.
Robert’s Funeral Service will be Monday in the CUFFE-McGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 MAPLE STREET LYNN at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2:00-6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to L.E.H.S.
