Services for Boyd Leland Stewart, 95, of Katy, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2014 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Harold Hancock officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Stewart was born February 27, 1918 in De Smet, South Dakota, the son of the late Evelyn (Keating) and Bert Lee Stewart. He passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014 at his home in the Sunrise of Cinco Ranch Assisted Living Center in Katy, Texas.
Mr. Stewart was married to Imogene Kennedy Stewart for over 70 years, and they were residents of Lufkin for 60 years. He retired in 1983 after a 23-year career with the Lufkin Daily News. Participating as a longtime member of the Lufkin Police Academy and Lufkin Ambassadors, Mr. Stewart, along with his wife, Imogene, were once named Lufkin Ambassadors of the Year. He was a charter member and Deacon of Timberland Drive Church of Christ, and in his later years worshipped at Fry Road Church of Christ in Katy. Mr. Stewart served his country in the United States Army Air Corps as an officer, pilot, and flight instructor during World War II.
Mr. Stewart was known by the Stetson cowboy hat he always wore. His warmth, joyful sense of humor and boundless enthusiasm always made his family and friends feel welcomed, comfortable and loved. No one was ever more pleased to greet you at the door than Boyd Stewart.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Imogene Kennedy Stewart of Katy; sons, Boyd Leland Stewart, II and friend Nancy Harmon of Dallas and Kim Stephen Stewart and wife Alice of Katy; grandchildren, Samantha Stewart Scheiner and husband Jon of Houston, Christopher Stephen Stewart and wife Amy of Dallas, and Kevin Michael Stewart of Austin; great-granddaughter, Evelyn Rose Stewart of Dallas; sisters-in-law, Donna Stewart of De Smet, South Dakota and Merna Bethany of Stamps, Arkansas; niece, Susan Stewart Fenley Warner of League City; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by two younger brothers, Jim Stewart and Bert C. Stewart.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Christopher Stewart and Kevin Stewart; grandson-in-law, Jon Scheiner; and Elders of the Timberland Drive Church of Christ, Mike Penn, John Adams and Tim Beamon.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday evening, January 6, 2014 at Gipson Funeral Home.
