Monte Lewis Abbath, 82, of Fair Oaks, CA passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loving family on May 15, 2014 which was the 60th wedding anniversary to his beloved with wife Shirley. He was born on April 19, 1932, in McCurtain, OK. Prior to moving to Fair Oaks in 2003 Monte lived in Moorpark, CA for more than 55 years. He was a 1951 graduate of Moorpark Memorial Union High School.
He is survived by his devoted wife Shirley (Brewer) Abbath; his children, son Jeffrey Abbath (wife Susan) of Visalia, CA, daughter-in-law Ann Abbath (widow of Steven) of Greeley, CO, and daughter Linda Wheeler (husband Rodney) of Orangevale, CA; eight grandchildren Keith and Kyle Abbath, Steven Jr., Chrissi and Kevin Abbath, Joshua, Kasey and Corey Wheeler; and three adoring great granddaughters Aubrey, Isabella and Ava. Monte was preceded in death by his parents William Abbath and Margaret Abbath O’Neal; siblings William Abbath, Martha Shaw, and Helen Davis; and his son Steven Abbath.
Monte was a Korean War veteran, serving in the US Army as a Sergeant in Heavy Mortar Company 224th Infantry Regiment. During his military career he was decorated with the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars and Combat Infantry Badge. After service he worked at the US Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme, CA. In 1956 Monte began a long career as an operator for Shell Chemical and USA Petrochem in Ventura, CA. He worked at Moorpark College as the carpenter until his retirement.
Monte’s family meant the world to him; he was a loving husband, father and PopPa. He was involved with his son’s Boy Scout troop and Little League. Monte was a volunteer firefighter for Moorpark Fire Station 42 for 16 years. He enjoyed camping, fishing and boating with his family and friends.
Monte never met a stranger and was well liked by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
