Scott grew up in Chicago, where he worked summers at the Museum of Science & Industry and graduated as a member of the National Honor Society from Hirsch HS in 1941. He attended Purdue University both before and after his WWII duty, graduating with a degree in engineering in 1948. At Purdue, he was student union president, a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, and sang in the Glee Club.
Scott was a US Army Air Corps 2nd Lieutenant pilot of a B-25 Mitchell. He earned a bronze “battle star” medal for his service with the 380th bomber squadron, 310th bomber group, 12th AF during the historic 1945-46 Po Valley campaign. He later served in the Air Force Reserves.
Scott married his high school sweetheart, Doris Lorraine Owens, in July 1948. He began his career with General Electric later that same year. Scott traveled the globe during his illustrious career with GE culminating in his role developing and teaching management practices at General Electric’s famed Management Development Institute in Crotonville, New York. Scott retired from GE in January 1987 and moved to Sacramento. In Sacramento, he worked as a volunteer at the California State Fair 1994-2008. Scott enjoyed attending ballgames, going to the theatre and dining out, and playing card games with his family. Scott was awarded the honorary title of Kentucky Colonel for his volunteer work with the United Way.
Scott was well-loved and an inspiration to his family and friends by the way he so fully lived his life. With his natural story-telling abilities and fondness for puns and other word play, Scott delighted in making people laugh. Affectionately known by his children as the “Old Duck”, he was father to six: Scott D. (Suzanna), Craig E. (Caroline), Debra L., John W. (predeceased), Doris D. (David McCarter), and Diane L., and grandfather to eight: Jonathan M., Sarah B. (Dustin Adams), Joseph S., Evan R., Jeffrey S., Meghan D., Ryan M., and Aidan W. He will also be greatly missed by his sister Phyllis Strick and nephew Philip Strick Jr. A veteran’s memorial service was held to honor Scott at Westminster Memorial Park in Westminster, CA on August 23rd at 11 a.m.
