Dave was born on March 28, 1933 in Denver, Colorado to Rex L. and Marie A. Murphy. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol Kaye Murphy; children, Cynthia S. Murphy, Julie Murphy Seavy (and husband Robert), Timothy A. Murphy (and wife Beth), Jennifer L. Murphy (and husband Harry), and Gregory J. Murphy; grandchildren, Ryan Seavy (and wife Nikole), Allyson Murphy, Kellen Seavy, Parker Landry-Murphy, Brenna Murphy-Estus, Caitlyn Murphy-Dunn, Hayden Murphy-Estus, Westley Landry-Murphy, Kacey Murphy-Brandt, and Maeve Murphy-Estus; siblings, James M. Murphy, Jane Murphy Leighton, and Daniel S. Murphy.
Dave was a board-certified ear, nose and throat physician in Denver, Colorado, a 50-year member of the Colorado Medical Society, and a Fellow of The Triological Society. He graduated from South High School in Denver, Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, and the University of Colorado Medical School. Dave helped draft the Colorado Patient Autonomy Act and was active in counseling seniors in end of life decision-making. He also served as a MASH doctor in the United States Army during the Viet Nam war. The Triological Society recognized Dave for his research and development of the larynx splint.
As a standout basketball player in high school and college, Dave played throughout his life, including the Senior Olympics. Dave performed in community choral groups and appeared as “Frosty the Snowman” in The Denver Parade of Lights and lots of other venues. Dave was active at South Broadway Christian Church, volunteered with various organizations, and provided pro bono medical care to many in his office and in the field. He also served on the Boards of Tennyson Center for Children and Bessie’s Hope.
Most importantly, Dave was a devoted father and grandfather. He took great pleasure in sharing the Colorado mountains and other activities with his children and grandchildren. Dave was a kind and gentle man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at South Broadway Christian Church, 23 Lincoln Street, Denver, Colorado 80203. Private graveside service to follow.
