He was the Son of Fred and Olive Martin.
Don was a firefighter. He became a volunteer firefighter for the Herring Cove Volunteer Fire Department as a teenager in 1976 and spent many years serving his community until 2001. He became a career firefighter in 1982 at DND and remained there working at the job he loved rising in rank to Platoon Chief. He was passionate about representing both the individual firefighters and the integrity of the DND Fire Department through his involvement with the PSAC Union as a member and Local President.
Besides being a firefighter he was also a committed volunteer serving on several boards including: Spryfield Rink Board, Herring Cove Rate Payers, JL Ilsley Girls Hockey Team and various other sport and community events. Whenever there was a call for volunteers Don gave of his time freely and energetically.
His dedication for his job and community was surpassed only by his passion and dedication to his family. He took care of everyone he loved. Coming from a large family his sense of family commitment kept him close to his roots and he was always on hand to assist. Don was a demonstrative father and husband, never letting his daughters forget how proud he was of them. Married for 27 years, never a moment went by that his love and respect was not shown or felt.
