Dr. Nickolas G. Zimmermann of Salisbury passed away Friday September 29, 2017 at age 67. Nickolas was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on September 11, 1950, son to the late Arno and Kathleen Zimmermann. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Mary E. Zimmermann and his siblings: Debra Crisp (Kevin Church), Shirley (Clark) Adams, Ronald (Joy) Zimmermann and Thomas (Ginny) Zimmermann; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Dr. Zimmermann was Associate Professor, Extension Poultry Specialist on the faculty of the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the University of Maryland, College Park He was dedicated to his teaching at the university and working with the poultry farmers and chicken fanciers. He enjoyed educating and mentoring 4-H youth involving them with the poultry industry. Dr. Z. coached the Maryland State Poultry Judging team to win first place in overall judging at the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in 2014. He was a long time member the Poultry Science Association, American Poultry Historical Society and other professional organizations, serving in many positions and committees.
He received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1981. He was on the faculty of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey from 1981-1982. At the Washington State University from 1981-1994 he was at the Western Washington Research and Extension Center in Puyallup. In 1994 he was at the University of Maryland Lower Eastern Shore Research and Extension Center in Princess Anne, and transferred to the College Park campus in 2002. He retired from the University of Maryland, College Park in Sept. of 2014.
Nickolas was a gentle man with varied talents and interests; he was a life-long learner. He enjoyed traveling and visiting museums, adventures on his motorcycle, restoring his 1959 Austin Healy, and wrenching on just about any old vehicle, especially his beloved collection of 1976 Buick Electra Limited cars. He was always interested in nature; observing birds and other wild life either from his deck or camping and hiking. He loved reading westerns, science fiction and almost anything science related. He liked watching ice hockey, car races and fireworks.
Memorial services are being planned for friends and co-workers in Maryland as well as a memorial service for extended family in Wisconsin later this year.
