Shirley Lee Mercante, age 83, entered into eternal rest at her home surrounded by her loving family on January 19, 2018. She was born in Springfield, Louisiana and was a resident of New Orleans and Metairie for the past 67 years. She was married to Ignatius D. Mercante for 53 years, until his death in 2005. She was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and her “Ms. Peggy”.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Kate Lee, and her brother, Leon E. Lee, Jr. She is survived by her sister Peggy Southworth (John) and her four children, Denise M. Danna, Donald E. Mercante (Teresita), Karen M. Mercante, and Susan M. Walsh (Stephen), eight grandchildren, Dawn Danna Marullo (Frank), Staci Danna Snorgrass (Brian), Gary Danna, Jr., Lorenza Mercante Zwain (Max), Anna Mercante, Dominic Mercante, Ian Walsh, and Corey Walsh, and seven great-grandchildren, Bryce, Mason, Frankie, Angelia, Josie, Cora, and Connie.
She graduated from Louisiana State University at New Orleans with a B.A. in Education and a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. She was an elementary school teacher at Fisk-Howard School in New Orleans for 30 years.
The family of Shirley Mercante wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Nurse Sarah Sisung and personal caretaker, Marilyn Joseph, for providing exceptional care and friendship for their mother for the last several years.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at 1pm. A visitation will begin at 11am. Interment will follow at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
